Mira Murati, the Ex CTO and now the interim CEO of the all-popular ChatGPT parent company OpenAI, has suddenly come into the limelight after the dramatic exit of Sam Altman – the Ex CEO of Open AI, as he was fired by the Board of Directors of OpenAI on accounts on “incapability” to hold the position any longer.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, expressed confidence in Murati’s unique qualifications for the position and announced a seamless transition while the company initiates a formal search for a permanent CEO.

Mira Murati - Who was she before being the CTO of OpenAI?

Mira Murati, at 34, assumes the role of interim CEO, bringing with her a background in mechanical engineering. Born in Albania in 1988, Murati distinguished herself as an undergraduate student at Dartmouth College by building a hybrid race car. She gained experience as an intern at Goldman Sachs and Zodiac Aerospace before joining Tesla, where she played a pivotal role in the development of the Model X car. Additionally, Murati contributed her skills to a startup called Leap Motion, focusing on a computing system for tracking hand and finger motions.

Mira Murati - How she grew at OpenAI

Joining OpenAI in 2018, Murati swiftly climbed the ranks, being promoted to Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the previous year. OpenAI described her as a vital member of the leadership team, contributing significantly to the company’s evolution into a global AI leader. Murati’s extensive experience, deep understanding of the company’s values, operations, and business, positioned her as a natural choice to lead OpenAI during this transitional period.

In a memo reviewed by Bloomberg, Murati expressed feeling “honored and humbled” to assume the leadership role. She highlighted the crucial juncture at which OpenAI finds itself, with widespread adoption of their tools, active development on their platforms, and policymakers contemplating effective regulations for these systems. Murati sees this as an opportune moment to contribute to a future where AI is harnessed for positive impact.

During a companywide meeting, Murati informed OpenAI employees that Satya Nadella and Kevin Scott, CEO and CTO of Microsoft— one of OpenAI’s major backers—expressed the “utmost confidence” in the company’s direction. She reiterated OpenAI’s commitment to finding a new CEO through a search process.
